Managers Respond to Change, Leaders Seek It

JFK      There are so many great Leaders in history that exemplify the notion that Leaders are change agents.  From a business perspective, Steve Jobs comes to mind, and is one of my favorite of all time.  Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John F. Kennedy also conjure up images of people willing to look for ways to change the World they live in.

These are all great examples, but how can we relate to this?  How do you boil these down to something more tangible, something more relative to our everyday World?  Well, I think we can do this by looking at everyday business examples and then challenging ourselves to respond differently.  For example, I am sure all of us can relate to a specific goal we are attempting to achieve.  Let’s take one in healthcare – patient experience.  This is a basic customer service metric that provides real data on how well our business is performing on a regular basis.

Most managers will receive the results of these types of reports and then respond to whatever metric is under-performing.  They make adjustments, and then wait for the next report to come out.  Then, they repeat the process.  None of this is wrong, but it rarely results in any Earth shattering results that truly change the complexion of the environment.  The results are short-term at best.

The true Leader does not wait for reports or someone to tell them what isn’t working.  Instead, they are developing creative, innovative, and cutting-edge systems and processes to completely change the World they are living in.  Leaders get everyone’s buy-in from the beginning.  They wake up every morning and design ways to move things forward, to make any and every change necessary until they have created something special.

Do not settle for being reactive.  As a leader, seek change.  Thirst for making things better.  Inspire people to be a part of something they can be proud of, to want to go above and beyond – not because of some report, but because they genuinely want to.

The Leaders discussed previously all thought that they could make the World a better place, and guess what?  They did.  As a leader, you don’t need to change the World, but you do need to seek ways to change yours.
