Praise in Public, Coach in Private

Pure Inspiration                There are times when it becomes important to provide feedback, both positive and negative.  As a leader, you must be willing to both give and receive on a regular basis.  The key to doing so, is in the delivery.  Far too many times you see someone chastise or belittle someone in front of peers and even the teams they are supposed to lead.  Leaders know better than this.

When you give negative feedback, or critique someone’s efforts, it should generally be done so behind closed doors.  This allows them to maintain their dignity and pride without others present.  I have had many of these discussions over the years, and I can tell you from first-hand experience, that they don’t always go well.  People receiving negative feedback can become defensive, argumentative, and/or withdrawn when presented with this.

In contrast, when giving positive feedback, it should be shared openly.  In fact, the more the merrier, in my opinion.  Celebrate success.  Recognize accomplishments.  Give kudos to individuals and teams that have earned it.  Do it regularly, just make sure to do it in public whenever possible.

When you do this, your team will start to respect that you do not look for opportunities to embarrass them in front of their peers.  They will appreciate that you save that for personal conversations.  They will also being to appreciate the fact that successes are celebrated for all to see.  Which also shows your team that you are not the type of leader that takes credit for their hard work.  When you recognize them in front of your leaders, they will take notice, and you will be recognized yourself as a strong leader that your team can trust.

Just remember this simple rule: Praise in public, coach in private.
